In the Northeast, black rot, downy mildew, and Alternaria are\u00a0common fungal diseases of brassicas, but to date there are few effective organic management solutions. These\u00a0diseases can spread by contaminated seed, equipment, and weed seeds. As a result, broccoli\u00a0heads can rot and become unsalable.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

This trial tests the impact of Brassica bio-rationals\u2014low-risk pesticides that contain naturally occurring beneficial microorganisms\u2014on broccoli.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

In collaboration with Cornell Cooperative Extension Eastern NY Commercial Horticulture\u00a0(CCEENYCH), the trial evaluated seven bio-rationals and two copper formulations in a replicated\u00a0trial of broccoli. Researchers evaluated the biorational fungicides on broccoli grown at the Farm\u00a0Hub where Black Rot (BR), Downy Mildew (DM) and Alternaria Leaf Spot\/Head Rot (ALS), have\u00a0all posed persistent production challenges.<\/p>

The goal is to provide growers with better management recommendations in our regional\u00a0climate.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What impact<\/strong>, if any, do pre-transplant applications of Badge X2 (Copper Oxychloride,\u00a0Copper Hydroxide) or LifeGard (Bacillus mycoides isolate J) have on foliar disease\u00a0severity observed over the production season when compared to broccoli plants in an\u00a0untreated control that received no pre-transplant fungicide\/bactericide?<\/li>
  2. Is there any synergistic disease suppression<\/strong> effect of combining pre-transplant\u00a0biorational product applications with in-field biorational applications?<\/li>
  3. How well can each of the nine biorational products work alone to suppress BR, DM, and\u00a0ALS in broccoli when compared to an untreated control that received no in-season\u00a0fungicide\/bactericide applications?<\/li>
  4. Can statistically significant differences in marketable broccoli yield be observed in a\u00a0small-plot<\/strong> randomized complete block design trial intended to primarily evaluate\u00a0disease severity?<\/li>
  5. What trends<\/strong> in disease severity reduction can be observed from a single year product\u00a0screening trial in order to inform the development of season-long biorational programs?<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    The researchers used a randomized complete block design with four replicates and ten\ntreatments for this trial.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Each treatment plot was 15 bed-feet long and consisted of three rows\u00a0of broccoli. The three pre-transplant biorational treatments were randomized and applied at\u00a0the row level within each 15 bed-foot long plot. The ten field applied biorational treatments\u00a0were randomized and applied at the plot level over each of the three rows in each 15 bed-foot
    long plot.<\/p>

    The statistical analyses for the data were completed using a generalized linear model to\u00a0evaluate the row-level pre-transplant treatments, the plot-level field treatments, and the
    interaction between the pre-transplant and in-field treatments for statistically significant\u00a0difference at p<0.05. Multiple comparisons of treatment means were made by applying a post-hoc Tukey\u2019s HSD at p<0.05.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
