The essential work of agriculture would continue, and like all farms, we would have to adapt quickly to make sure that it did. On March 13th we sent almost a third of the Farm Hub’s staff home to work remotely, while our farm manager and on-site staff went to work rearranging almost everything we do on the farm.

At first, it was reductive, a kind of sudden hard turn inward: “No guests on the farm!”, “No collaborators until Phase Two!” No gatherings, no workshops, no sharing (of equipment, pick-up trucks, tools, hallways, copiers, hugs, …food!). Next, it was additive, but not in a “plus” kind of way: wipes and disinfectants, gloves and masks, temperature checks, and cleaning protocols posted in English and Spanish. Seemingly more rules and more gear were piled on every day, and with them more worry.

But soon came the other, amazing “mores.” There were more greens growing in the greenhouses and more vegetables added to the plantings in the field. More Zoom calls between program managers, farms, and food pantries working on deliveries, more boxes of produce leaving the farm for donation, and more calls for language interpretation through community organizers. More hope. More pride. Pride in our team and in the many people we saw operating much closer than we were to the front lines, often with greatly limited resources.

These really are difficult times, with personal and professional challenges that none of us could have expected in our wildest dreams. All over the country, including here in the Hudson Valley, we have seen the consequences of deep societal inadequacies magnified, the damages and rewards having been disproportionally distributed along racial and economic lines for generations. Food insecurity, long identified as a problem and exacerbated by COVID-19, exposes some of the forces at the root of these inadequacies. The murders of George Floyd and others, and the grief and the calls to action surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement, dare us to take more time to face important questions at the Farm Hub, both in regard to our own community and the outside world. We don’t have a roadmap for this. We are, however, committed to figuring it out together, and I feel cautiously optimistic that the foundational work we have done in the past to build trust and an atmosphere conducive to dialogue within our organization will serve us well as a point of entry.

As we head into the heart of the growing season, we are taking our first steps towards this dialogue via small groups of staff. And, with COVID-19 a moving target and with various stages of reopening taking place, we are constantly rearranging the workplace. Like everyone, we are trying mightily to plan intelligently for the unexpected come fall.

In the meantime, this summer we are excited to begin construction on two new important farm buildings, our granary and our machine shop, both of which will significantly enhance our ability to grow, store, and distribute food in partnership with nature. With construction on-site, the Farm Hub’s home-base will no doubt get messier, and even uglier, before improvements are visible. And so it is with the world. Let’s continue, wherever we are and however things stand, to see the beauty emerging from the disruption.

—Brooke Pickering-Cole
