In a current project, tested scientifically on a 10-acre Farm Hub corn field divided into nine parcels of three zones each, we measured a new form of soil health testing (Woods End Labs Soil Health Audit) and compared it to a new form of plant sap analysis by Crop Health Labs which represents NovaCropControl, a research and test center focused on plant sap analysis based in the Netherlands.

Usually, these kinds of tests are performed separately and rarely combined for an integrated interpretation. In this study we ran them simultaneously in the same zones, and put all the results from the corn field together – stitching them with sophisticated statistical software into a 3-dimensional model. In this way we could see many patterns emerging, such as plant to plant pattern, plant to soil, and soil to soil.

All Nutrient Factors in Sap and Soil. Courtesy of Woods End Laboratories.

What we found were many strong interrelationships between various factors. We could detect that as some nutrients go up (in the plant sap), others go down. For example, if potassium went high then magnesium – essential for photosynthesis and animal and human nutrition, went down.

Similarly, we saw the same pattern with the soil tests and we called these interactions “synergistic” or “antagonistic”.

The different tests we performed (sap versus soil) are described by some scientists as existing on differing time-scales. Sap Tests take the plant juice immediately at the moment and analyze it. Soil tests extract what has accumulated in soil for months if not years.

It is in some ways like watching a slow moving bank of clouds in the sky versus a patch of leaves blowing on the ground in the same direction – the movements are related, maybe even correlated, but the leaves appear to be moving much faster relative to the soil layer.

Dark clouds gather over a Kernza field. Photo contributed by Jay Goldmark.

That’s the same thing with sap versus soil tests – the sap tests are conceived to reflect short term nutrient gradients on the scale of days to a week, and the soil tests reflect a scale perhaps on the level of weeks to months. Scientifically, we shouldn’t necessarily expect the correlations to be perfect. But we do expect to see a relationship, otherwise we may be wasting effort making management decisions with inappropriate sources of information – a common dilemma in farming.

The project is ongoing and the various teams involved are evaluating the data for a later presentation. Already we see important connections of soil nitrogen with sap levels taken from the corn leaves, soil bulk density and tensions between phosphorus and potassium and boron, to name a few. If even partially successful, we should be able to decide how to fine tune testing choices for future improvements and efficiency in overall management.

Will Brinton is founder and director of Woods End Soil Laboratory in Maine.
