It is also important to consider that language justice principles are being followed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February, the Hudson Valley Farm Hub hosted a 2-day intensive workshop on interpretation for social justice for staff and members of partner organizations in the region. The workshop was facilitated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CaracolLanguageCoop\/\">Caracol Language Cooperative<\/a>, a Brooklyn-based worker-owned company that provides Spanish-language translation and interpretation services with a focus on social justice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Farm Hub\u2019s Language Justice team (see <a href=\"https:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/bestofbothworlds\/\">&#8220;Best of Both Worlds&#8221;<\/a>) and representatives from the following organizations participated:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.soulfirefarm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&nbsp;Soul Fire Farm,<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nobodyleavesmidhudson.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kingstonlandtrust.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Kingston Land Trust,<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitepinecommunityfarm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">White Pine Community Farm<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soulfirefarm.org\/\">,&nbsp;<\/a>and&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wjcny.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Worker Justice Center of New York<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attendees also brainstormed critical components of language-justice and learned about components of a multilingual workspace including interpretation, translation, equipment, communication and documentation, planning and evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DSC_0124.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1158\" src=\"https:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DSC_0124.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7812\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DSC_0124.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DSC_0124-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DSC_0124-1024x791.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Liliana Conde and Telesh Lopez of Caracol Language Coop facilitate the Interpreting for Social Justice workshop<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suggestions on how to apply language justice principles to multilingual spaces included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Creating a space where no language is superior<\/li><li>Resisting the dominance of any one language<\/li><li>Active commitment to respond to the needs of a multilingual space<\/li><li>Creating a space that is truly welcoming to varied perspectives<\/li><li>Access to knowledge and other\u2019s contributions benefits all<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The training included a rundown of techniques and strategies surrounding interpretation such as how to read an audience, the importance of using facial expressions, how to interpret through whispering, and how to interpret sayings such as \u201craining cats and dogs\u201d that don\u2019t exist in other cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The afternoon session also covered simultaneous interpretation with the use of equipment and included a scenario in which the speaker\u2019s words are interpreted in real-time using special auto-transmitters, microphones, radios, and earphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Erick, a Farm Hub production staff member and a member of the Language Justice team, says offering multilingual access allows English learners access to everything from conferences and workshops to safety trainings. It also encourages English learners to ask questions and participate in discussions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diana Lopez Martinez, an organizer at Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson in Ulster County, says she was quickly able to put the training to use. Lopez Martinez is a native Spanish speaker and learned English when she was three. Since she was a child she was called on to interpret for family, but she was never formally trained. On the job nowadays or these days, she often finds herself having to interpret at leadership meetings or public hearings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI learned [that] translation isn\u2019t the same thing as interpretation. I\u2019d always hear \u2018can you translate for me,\u2019 but that\u2019s really a written document whereas interpretation is verbal,\u201d says Lopez Martinez. Now more familiar with the equipment, she has her hopes set on bringing the equipment to her own organization.&nbsp; \u201cI already told them that interpretation has to be a part of our budget,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Interpretando para la justicia social<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Farm Hub lleva a cabo un taller de interpretaci\u00f3n para la justicia social para organizaciones comunitarias<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crear un espacio multiling\u00fce no es tan simple como traducir o interpretar de un idioma a otro. Tambi\u00e9n es importante considerar que se est\u00e9n siguiendo principios de justicia de lenguaje. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En febrero Hudson Valley Farm Hub auspici\u00f3 un taller intensivo de 2 d\u00edas de interpretaci\u00f3n para la justicia social para el personal y miembros de organizaciones colaboradoras en la regi\u00f3n. El taller fue facilitado por la <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CaracolLanguageCoop\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cooperativa Caracol Language, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">una compa\u00f1\u00eda de trabajadores due\u00f1os, con sede en Brooklyn, que proporciona servicios de traducci\u00f3n e interpretaci\u00f3n del idioma espa\u00f1ol con un enfoque en la justicia social.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participaron el equipo de Justicia de Lenguaje de Farm Hub los otros beneficia a todos <\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La capacitaci\u00f3n incluy\u00f3 un resumen de t\u00e9cnicas y estrategias alrededor de la interpretaci\u00f3n como c\u00f3mo leer a un p\u00fablico, la importancia de usar expresiones faciales, c\u00f3mo interpretar susurrando y c\u00f3mo interpretar dichos como \u201cest\u00e1 lloviendo a c\u00e1ntaros\u201d que no existen en otras culturas.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La sesi\u00f3n de la tarde tambi\u00e9n cubri\u00f3 la interpretaci\u00f3n simult\u00e1nea con el uso de equipo e incluy\u00f3 una situaci\u00f3n hipot\u00e9tica en la cual las palabras del orador son interpretadas en tiempo real utilizando auto trasmisores especiales, micr\u00f3fonos, radios y auriculares. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erick, un miembro del personal de producci\u00f3n de Farm Hub y un miembro del equipo de Justicia de Lenguaje, dice que brindar acceso multiling\u00fce permite a los aprendices de ingl\u00e9s acceso a todo desde conferencias y talleres hasta capacitaciones de seguridad. Tambi\u00e9n anima a los aprendices de ingl\u00e9s a hacer preguntas y participar en las discusiones. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diana L\u00f3pez Mart\u00ednez, un organizadora de Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson del Condado de Ulster, dice que pudo r\u00e1pidamente poner en pr\u00e1ctica la capacitaci\u00f3n. L\u00f3pez Mart\u00ednez es una hispanoparlante nativa y aprendi\u00f3 ingl\u00e9s cuando ten\u00eda tres a\u00f1os. Desde que era muy ni\u00f1a la llamaban para interpretar para la familia, pero nunca tuvo una capacitaci\u00f3n formal. Hoy en d\u00eda en el trabajo, con frecuencia se encuentra teniendo que interpretar en reuniones de liderazgo o en audiencias p\u00fablicas.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAprend\u00ed [que] la traducci\u00f3n no es lo mismo que la interpretaci\u00f3n. Siempre escuchaba \u2018me puedes traducir\u2019, pero eso realmente se trata de un documento escrito mientras que la interpretaci\u00f3n es verbal\u201d, dice L\u00f3pez Mart\u00ednez.
