{"id":7906,"date":"2019-04-15T19:55:47","date_gmt":"2019-04-15T19:55:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/?p=7906"},"modified":"2021-01-07T18:56:16","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T18:56:16","slug":"bard-students-visit-farm-hub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/es\/bard-students-visit-farm-hub\/","title":{"rendered":"Bard students visit Farm Hub"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mceTemp\"><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Students tour the farm and get an inside look at farming<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Students from the \u201cRe-imagined Farms in Re-imagined Spaces\u201d class taught by Katrina Light, Bard\u2019s Supervisor of Food and Agricultural Programs as part of the Environmental and Urban Studies program, recently paid a visit to the Farm Hub to learn about organic farming practices and a variety of initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An overview of the small grains trial, an ongoing collaboration between the Farm Hub, Cornell and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County, that involves research of <a href=\"https:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/es\/spotlighting-grains\/\">small grains varieties<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>ProFarmer Jayne Hanson shared the challenges of growing hops noting certain diseases such as downy mildew, and also shared why growing hops are her passion.<\/li>\n<li>Raul Carreon, post-harvest coordinator, discussed the importance of farm and food safety during a tour of the wash and pack.<\/li>\n<li>Students received a multilingual experience when Adriana Pericchi and Carreon, members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/es\/bestofbothworlds\/\">Farm Hub\u2019s Language Justice team,<\/a> demonstrated simultaneous interpretation. \u201cLanguage Justice is something I think is important and I haven\u2019t seen it in similar instances. It is interesting to see it in a working environment,\u201d says Jess Belardi, a Bard student.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Jay Goldmark and Jeff Arnold, head of the field crops and vegetable production team, gave an overview of the vegetable fields, corn fields and the greenhouses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7908\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7908\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_8226.jpeg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7908 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_8226-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_8226-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_8226-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/hvfarmhub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_8226.jpeg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7908\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"text-align: left!important;\">Bard students take a peek at the greenhouse.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Farm Hub\u2019s Associate Director of Programming Sarah Brannen led and organized the tour.<\/p>\n<p>Light says many of the students have an interest in food and farming and are exploring careers in food and farming.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the class, students visit a variety of regional non-profit farms throughout the semester including Soul Fire Farm, Hawthorne Valley Farm, Kingston YMCA Farm Project, and the Poughkeepsie Farm Project at Vassar College.
