The inter-row mower is a new tool for managing weeds between crop rows. The goal of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of the inter-row mower for weed management in organic no-till dry beans. The experiment is being conducted at five sites, including the Hudson Valley Farm Hub. Black beans are no-till planted into mulch from a rolled-crimped cereal rye cover crop. The inter-row mower is tested at different growth stages of black bean to determine the most effective times for weed management. We are assessing weed and crop biomass, black bean yield, and weed seed production. The goal of this work is to provide recommendations for inter-row mowing.



About Eric Youngerman:
Eric Youngerman is a Research Technician in the Sustainable Cropping Systems Lab. He is especially interested in how agroecological strategies can enhance populations of beneficial soil invertebrates and how crop rotation and management strategies. He also enjoys integrating novel management and measurement technologies into agroecological research, such as soil water sensors and the inter-row mower.
About Matthew Ryan:
Matthew Ryan is an Associate Professor of Sustainable Cropping Systems in the Section of Soil and Crop Sciences at Cornell University. He works with farmers, students, and other scientists to evaluate cropping system performance in terms of crop yield, profitability, environmental impact, and resilience.
