Buildings Mechanic
The Hudson Valley Farm Hub (HVFH) is a non-profit center for resilient agriculture located in Ulster County, New York. Founded in 2013, HVFH is dedicated to fostering an equitable and ecologically resilient food system in the Hudson Valley. We provide professional farmer training, host and conduct research, cultivate language justice, and support food access efforts in the region through food donations and innovative mission-aligned programming. We grow grains, cover crops, and vegetables with production taking place year-round across 1500 acres of farmland and a suite of greenhouses. A diverse, multi-lingual staff of ~65 full-time employees serve in varied roles in areas of administration, farm operations, and programs.
We are seeking a talented and detail-oriented individual with general construction skills to join our team as a full-time Buildings Mechanic. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, be flexible, and will have relevant prior experience, including with general repair work and light carpentry.
Position Summary
The Buildings Mechanic works with the Construction and Facilities Team to ensure maintenance, upkeep and improvements of Farm Hub facilities are completed efficiently and in proper fashion. The Construction and Facilities Team is responsible for the safe and effective maintenance of farm facilities, office buildings, and Farm Hub grounds, and is generally charged with keeping the Farm Hub’s infrastructure and facilities both well-functioning and attractive year-round. The Buildings Mechanic participates in training, workshops and staff meetings related to farm operations during work hours. In addition, general farm work and other duties will be assigned. The Buildings Mechanic will report to the Facilities Manager.
Responsibilities
- With direction from the Facilities Manager, performs all preventative, upkeep, and repair maintenance of all Farm Hub buildings and facilities, as well as renovation and building projects
- Performs carpentry, light plumbing work, painting, flooring, minor electrical repairs and general system maintenance; performs some tasks at heights
- Contributes to maintaining the department’s tools and carpentry shop space
- Operates Farm Hub vehicles, equipment, and personnel lifts, including scissor and boom lifts
- In collaboration with the Facilities Manager, tracks work orders, inventory, and asset maintenance electronically, using our CMMS system
- In conjunction with the Facilities Manager, contributes to the creation of relevant job hazard analyses and ensures all necessary safety protocols are followed
- Conducts and leads routine equipment maintenance, collaborating with the Farm Shop mechanics as necessary; ensures equipment used is properly cleaned
- Assists with on-site events (i.e. preparing infrastructure, assisting with set-up and decorating, especially if lifts required)
- Contributes to a compassionate and safe working and learning environment with the Facilities and Construction Team and other staff, partners, and visitors
- Actively participates in creating a culture of safety (both physical as well as emotional/psychological safety), including seeking out trainings or resources for themselves
- Performs other duties, including general farm work, as assigned

Required Qualifications
- Three to five years of prior experience in a similar position in construction, framing, and/or carpentry
- General construction skills including: general repair work, light carpentry, painting, plumbing repairs, electrical repairs, landscaping, tractor operation, work from ladders and expertise in the use of hand and power tools including Skill saw, table saw and all power tools; understanding of level, plumb and square
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and safely
- Experience and comfort with operating and/or working around heavy machinery and working at heights
- Physical strength and stamina, including ability to push, pull, lift, scrub, kneel, climb and other physical tasks; ability to lift and carry 50 lbs
- Basic computer skills, including familiarity with using Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel) and tech savvy enough to learn new applications quickly
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Proactive and motivated; ability to work independently as well as within a team (both as a leader and team member)
- Detail oriented; track record of working neatly and cleanly
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible and to adapt to changing demands and priorities
- Well-developed communication skills and ability to offer and/or take feedback and directions with a supportive and open attitude
- Honest, trust worthy, punctual and dependable

- Experience with work order and/or CMMS software
Physical Requirements: Requires the use of equipment, such as hand tools, power tools, testing instruments, and ladders. Must be able to traverse on various surfaces when conducting inspections and repairs. Requires ability to operate automobile to drive to and from various worksites on and off the Farm Hub property. Requires ability to perform manual work which will involve reaching, handling, crouching, climbing, balancing and lifting equipment, materials, parts or supplies, which can weigh up to 50 lbs. Work may be performed on ladders and/or scaffolding; uses bucket trucks and various lift equipment, etc. Works on roofs and in close quarters. May be exposed to various weather conditions, fumes, odors, dust, heat, and noise. Will be provided the appropriate PPE and safety training. Ability to sit or stand at workstation approximately 10-20% of the time.
Position Details & Typical Schedule: The Buildings Mechanic is a full-time, non-exempt, 40 hours a week, hourly position with a typical schedule of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm with a one-hour unpaid lunch. Occasional weekend and/or evening hours will be required as necessary. The position is on-site full-time, so the candidate must be able to reasonably commute to Hurley, NY. The compensation for this position is $25.00-$27.00 per hour with a competitive benefits package.
