Farmscape Ecology Field Day

This event is for farmers, conservation professionals, land managers, and others interested in on-farm ecology to learn about the different research projects that occur at the Farm Hub and discussing their applications.

In 2019, the Applied Farmscape Ecology Program at the Farm Hub and the Hawthorne Valley Farmscape Ecology Program partnered to launch the Applied Farmscape Ecology Research Collaborative (AFERC) to further research in agriculture and ecology with the goal of sharing information, tools, and resources with farmers and communities in the region. The collaborative works together across disciplines with the goal of better understanding the complex interactions between on-farm habitats, biodiversity, and crop production in the region.

For four years, AFERC has conducted research on birds flying above, the soil and water underneath, and organisms in between. This year, we want to feature the important work AFERC partners have conducted and provide an opportunity to discuss the potential applications for farms and land in the region. Event participants will be able to learn about each project in the field, meet the researchers, and ask questions in this interactive workshop.

Organic No-Till Field Day

Visit the Hudson Valley Farm Hub on Aug 4, 2022 (rain date Aug 11) for a field day about organic no-till crop production targeted at field crop farmers in the region. Talks by researchers and growers will discuss cover and cash crops sequences, root disease, and weed management for organic no-till systems.

Attendees will be able to visit a research trial that the Hudson Valley Farm Hub and Cornell University are conducting to develop diverse organic no-till crop sequences for the Northeast. Visitors will have a chance to view 16 combinations of cover crops and no-till planted cash crops. We will also show the Farm Hub’s no-till planter and inter-row mowing equipment. Attendance is free but space is limited and registration is required.

Field Crops Equipment Field Day

Visit the Hudson Valley Farm Hub on June 30th from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm for a field day on field crops production. This field day will specifically look at the tractors and equipment used to grow field crops in both no-till and conventional tillage systems.

The Farm Hub will present in-field demonstrations for several pieces of equipment including a speed disc, roller-crimper, various grain drills, Einbock tine weeder, and rotary hoe. Discussions about the systems and rotations we employ for growing field crops will also be woven throughout the day. Talks will be led by the Farm Hub’s field crops team in both English and Spanish, with interpretation provided by the Farm Hub’s Language Justice team.

Space is limited. Registration is required for this event.
